Two birds, a male and a female turnstone, take the ferry from Falmouth every day to get lunch in St Mawes. They arrive for breakfast at 8.15am and then take the trip with the ferry over the River Fal for their lunch on the other side. According to skipper John Brown the birds arrive at 8.15am before they set out, and never miss the last ferry back. It is not entirely clear why the birds don't fly - either they are lazy or they like having company during their trip. The birds nicknamed Fred and Freda pick up their food from under rocks and stones and are among the thousends of species who spend the winter in Britain.
