An interesting article written by Jason L. Miller in WebProNews caught my eye earlier today. There are a lot of speculations on Wall Street of a possible merger among the most prominent internet related businesses. The first rumor is a possible purchase of Yahoo by Microsoft, and the second rumor is a merger between Yahoo and AOL. The most likely one seems a merger between Yahoo and AOL. Both companies are experiencing a decline and Time Warner seems open for such a merger. Yahoo is stagnant and AOL is ready to be sold piece by piece, making this merger quite attractive for both parts. Combined they at least would form a reasonable competitor to Google. In an ideal situation, Microsoft would buy the to-be company after the merger, as MSN is seriously sinking in the search market and this would at least form a serious competitor to Google. This brings us back to GEMAYA - a theoretical super conglomerate consisting of Google, eBay, Microsoft, Amazon, Yahoo and AOL. On paper this seems the only way Microsoft and Yahoo can catch Google. Miller takes it a step further and suggests two possible mega super-conglomerates. (What a word..) What about DAMMIT (Disney, Amazon, Microsoft, Motorola, Interactive, Time Warner) vs. E-GANGS (eBay, Google, Apple, News Corp., General Electric, Sun Microsystems)? Even though this all sounds silly and far-fetched, we haven't even seen the start of the possibilities yet. Things are moving forward rapidly and the internet is a competitive place. Recent take overs by Google have only been the start of what could be the first mega-corporates on the planet. Scared? You should be. |
